After number 10, goes number 9.. so the next title you really should play on current gen consoles, before you switch to next-gen and possibly loose the chance to play it, is Microsoft's own Xbox 360 exclusive franchise Gears of War.
So what's GoW all about? Simply put, it's new age Duke Nukem. Now don't take that in a bad sense of it being bad as critics have smashed Duke Nukem Forever. Back in the 90's Duke Nukem was the king in video game world. He was big, strong, trash talking, ass kicking dude not afraid to do whatever the hell he wanted to. Guys in Gears of War are the same.
The story isn't your greatest story ever told. It's simple enough for anyone to follow and does cary some emotional weight. That's basically what separates it from the good old Duke. And to GoW goes the credit for creating that cover system than any third-person shooter uses these days.
So far there are four games in this franchise, so pick any of them up and enjoy. Number 8 coming soon.
