Well, hello there. Welcome to my first ''Classic Games'' blog post. Let me make a short introduction before I proceed with writing what Is really the point of this post. I've been a gamer since the middle 90s and at that time everything was different than it is today. As for one, there were no mobile phones. Imagine that, only some 15 years ago there were no phones at all (not in my area), and today it's probably the most used medium for playing games.
As for myself, I was a kid back then, didn't know too much about the world. I had my SEGA Genesis console and there was no happier kid in the whole wide world. Yeah, Play Station was already in the market but I didn't even know it existed when I was loading my cartridges to play Super Mario Bros and others. So while I was in the 90s, I was actually playing games that were already 10 or more years old. And I loved them. Didn't worry about the graphics, or sound, just how fun it was to jump around in that whole new world. You could let your imagination do what the console's hardware couldn't.
After a few years, I was heavily addicted to Play Station but I never lost my love for SEGA and Nintendo games either. Then came the early 2000s and I finally caught up with the world, got a decent PC and started playing some of the classics from that world, and among the first games I played was the on I will talk about today, it's truly a classic that made it's mark in the history of video games. Without further ado, I'm talking about Half Life.

I had played some PC games before Half Life, but when I first played this one, I immediately knew I'm looking at something special. A simple, yet very atmospheric intro where you ride in an automated train while free to look around you to admire the whole project was amazing. Pure PERFECTION. That's the kind of moments that most games try to have, but only a few manage to pull of.
So we ride, for what seems like an eternity, going deeper into an underground base. Looking outside I see a security officer who locked himself out and is knocking on the door for his colleague to let him in. Scientists in white coats are working on some mysterious technology. Robots handling dangerous nuclear waste. A businessman in grey suit i passing by in a train. We go even more into the depths of some mountain range somewhere in the desert. During the whole ride a soothing female voice is explaining how the whole facility works. And then.. end of the line.

As I got of the train, I'm finally free. I go to the entrance, pass the security check and into the main lobby I go. Everything seems so live. Scientist and security personnel all working their jobs, fixing minor technical problems. It's like they really have a purpose. They are too busy to talk though, only a few are friendly enough to point me in the right direction.
There's the business man passing by. |
After a bit of walking around, I realized I'm an important guy in here. It seems I'm a scientist who does some really important stuff and as part of today's testing of some weird matter I'm supposed to get my protective suit on... and it TALKS.
After shooting a few rounds at the shooting range, I finally go about my business. That's when things start feeling weird. At first, I see that business man arguing with a scientist, but I can't hear hat they're saying. Then we all get stuck in an elevator heading down to the testing chamber. And then I enter the chamber. After about half an hour of feeling like I'm just living an ordinary day in my life as a scientist in a secret government facility, I somehow know after the door is locked behind me that nothing will ever be the same.
And boy, was I right. After I put that weird stone in the big machine that does who-knows-what.. not a few moments pass when everything goes to hell. Alarms ringing, explosions, electric bolts flyin trough the air.. I've entered the red zone.

Time to pull myself together, I get back to the elevator, the scientists I met earlier are dead or soon. As I try to make my way back to the entrance I see some creatures showing up, killing everyone they see. What the hell is this. I run as fast as I can. In one of the hallways I find a crowbar.. well, might as well take it with me. If I get stuck it might be helpful. Just a moment later a weir little creature jump straight on my face. It's like I'm living trough an Alien movie. The crowbar comes in handy as I manage to kill it.. it's good. For now.. and there my friends, the true story begins.
After this amazing intro, you are free to go wherever you want in the base. Of course it's a linear game so all the doors are locked or damages so you can't go trough, unless the developers meant it for you to go trough. Hours and hours later, after going trough the whole base, killing some incredible bosses, and even fighting the US army that came to seal the place by killing everything they see, I come to the Lambda sector. From there a few scientists send me to and alien world where I must kill the boss to stop the alien invasion.. and then the businessman.

Alien world Xen |
I don't want to reveal all the details in order not to ruin the fun of discovering all the locations, bosses, weapons etc.. but if there is any chance you can get this game on PC, get it. There's even a HD texture pack(HD as in 2000 definition so don't expect Crysis). I'm not sure if the game is available on Steam. I suppose it should be, but if it's not and you need help finding it, visit our facebook page and send us a message.
So that's it, I wish I had more time, I think I might write down the whole story and it wouldn't seem to much. But I got to stop at some point. I'll be back soon with another classic game. I already know which one I'll talk about so I'll give you a hint. It was released in 2002. Have fun.
